A ROTTED trunk has spelled the end of a popular landmark beech tree which was a feature of the the grounds of St Mary's Church, Newent.

The tree, said to be around 300 years old or more, was suffering from rot and had to be felled as it was becoming unsafe.

However, steps have been taken to ensure that the tree creates offspring, which are set to be planted on the same site.

The vicar, Rev Simon Mason said: "It is a very sad day when you have to take away such a stalwart, but we have retained part of the trunk and roots to create a seat for people to rest and contemplate."

He added: "All is not lost however as one of our Town Councillors, Cllr Barrie Wellington, who caretakes Newent Arboretum, has taken six cuttings from the tree and these will be nurtured for 2 years before planting out again in the churchyard."
