CORNWALL Councillors Nathan Bale and Nigel Pearce met with the Chair of Governors of Stratton Primary School, Chris Nichols, Headteacher of Stratton Primary School, Phil Aldis and Headteacher of Bude Infants School, Jane Greatbatch this week.

They discussed the fact that last year there were insufficient places to accommodate all the four-year-olds in the Bude/Stratton area. Bude Infant School had to, at very short notice, run an extra class. The information available would suggest that this situation will arise again next September.

Following the meeting, Cllr Bale said: "Both schools are at capacity and action needs to be taken to make sure that all children from Bude and Stratton who are entering the education system next year can do so where they live. The early years of a child's education are paramount and they should not be put at risk by lack of facilities or budget. We will be calling on the council to do all it can to assist our schools."

Cllr Nigel Peace commented: "It was really good to meeting with such passionate and well informed people and I am confident that by working together we can find the accommodation needed in the Bude and Stratton area. It is important that plans are made now and not left until the last minute."

North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson added: "I am pleased that Bude and Stratton's Cornwall Councillors have met with the heads of their local schools to take positive action about an issue that could be a big problem for their area. Cornwall's Schools have been performing incredibly well for many years now despite being underfunded by successive governments."
