A £10,000 grant will help create an online archive about life in Monmouth during the First World War.
Monmouth: A Town At War is the title of this project, which is funded with £9,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund's First World War: Then and Now programme. It will focus on gathering and displaying community photographs, memoirs and documents, linking the town with the events of 1914 - 18.
The project will include a digital archive of materials, a touring exhibition, plus a schools programme, which will allow residents and researchers the chance to find out about the impact of the conflict on the town.
From this September the Monmouthshire Museums Service will be running a series of workshops as part of a community roadshow event, where people can find out more about the project, and can consider signing up to become a project volunteer.
The volunteers will assist the museum staff in creating the touring exhibition, plus school 'object handling boxes' which will be created ready for September 2016.
Museums learning manager, Karin Molson, said: "This is a really exciting project and we are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. Monmouth: A Town at War will make use of the latest digital technology where information can be digitally recorded and made available through an on-line interactive archive which everyone can access and contribute to. The digital archive and social media platforms will allow people worldwide to discuss, contribute, share and research information about Monmouth, the local area and its residents during World War One. People can start participating in the project right now using Facebook and Twitter so if you have photographs, documents and family memories you would like to share just
