THIS year saw the 1st Bude Scouts summer camping take place at ‘Corf Scout Campsite’ on the beautiful Isle of Wight.
Fourteen scouts and four leaders spent a week on the island taking part in many great activities. These included hiking, fishing, pioneering, swimming and also something a little bit different, being able to be giants for a morning.
Visits to the Old Battery at The Needles, Carisbrooke Castle was very entertaining as was a quick trip to Cowes during their regatta week.
Fossil hunting was also very popular with the scouts as they found sea urchins, pieces of Belemnite and Ammonite. Also while hunting on a beach near Brook Chine, the scout group realised that the green, slimey rocks they were walking over were the fossilised footprints of dinosaurs that walked that way millions of years ago.
Leader Kevin O’Reilly said: “The whole week was amazing, beautiful weather, lots of fun and we met many interesting people who had us rolling about with laughter.
“It’s rewarding to see youngsters getting so much out of a camp, it makes all the hard work so worthwhile.”
The scouts are now setting their sights on 2018 when they will be going to either Iceland or Norway for their summer camp and so will now be staring their fundraising campaign.
Two years ago the scouts ran a Christmas postal service, which will be happening again this year. For just 25p the public are able to post a card to a loved one anywhere in the Bude, Stratton, Marhamchurch, Flexbury and Poughill areas.
